Animal Graphic Organizer (to help with project planning)

Animal Graphic Organizer
There are FIVE main groups of vertebrates: this means that they have a backbone and an internal skeleton rather than an outside shell or exoskeleton.  These groups are:

Mammals:
            Backbones; vertebrates
            Mammary (milk) glands
            Most have tails (excluding us)
            Warm-blooded
            Covered with fur
            Breathe with lungs
            Born, live, from parent

Birds:
            Backbones; vertebrates
            Covered with feathers
            Warm-blooded
            Breathe with lungs
Doesn’t have teeth; swallows food whole or crushes it
            Hatch from eggs

Amphibians:
            Backbones; vertebrates
Smooth moist skin; many have webbed feet
Breathe with gills THEN with lungs
Usually go through a metamorphosis; babies do not look like their parents
            Cold-blooded
            Hatch from eggs
ONLY an amphibian has a backbone, bare skin, and breathes in different ways

Fish:
            Backbones; vertebrates
            Scales
            Breathe with gills
            Cold-blooded
            Most swim using their fins
            Most hatch from eggs
Not all animals that live in the water are fish (ex. Dolphins, seals, starfish, and whales)

Reptiles:
            Backbones; vertebrates
            Dry skin and scales
            Most shed their skins
            Cold-blooded
Baby reptiles look like their parents
All reptiles are cold blooded, dry scales, and a backbone
            Breathe with lungs
            Most hatch from eggs
