Success in the Savanna, 4/11/14

Dear Parents:

What a lovely week it has been! The children have really enjoyed being able to get outside and enjoy the spring weather after such a long winter.  Wednesday was an added bonus of playing Capture the Flag on the field during PE.  Let’s hope the good weather is here to stay!

We managed to wrap up our Fractions unit this week and even sneak in a little probability and math baseball.  In science, we have unofficially concluded our water/weather unit (may do a small project or quiz in the future) and I will start a new unit just after break.  In social studies, we were not able to finish our study of the explorers so students can expect a few days of review upon return followed by a unit test on either Wednesday or Thursday.  Portfolios will be sent home on Monday for this purpose.  Response journals have been reviewed and returned.  Although there is not assigned letter writing over break, I do encourage students to do an extra letter to get ahead.  This really becomes helpful as the spring sporting season takes off and other spring responsibilities mount.

Several students and families have requested an optional work pack for the holidays.  Instead of sending a pack, I have sent home the unfinished math workbook, Volume 1, for added practice.  I’ve offered a point a page for work completed and will offer small prizes for 15, 20, and 25+ pages.  Also, I am sending home a social studies “refrigerator card” pack that includes all of the major concepts from grades K – 3 that will be covered on the upcoming social studies SOL test in May.  This pack is ideal for creating games or contests to be played on long trips or on weekends as review for the test.  I have asked students to put it in the social studies pocket of their binders instead of sending home in the Friday Folder.  This way they will see it as their responsibility and not yours about looking over and reviewing the important information.  I’m hopeful that every student will spend at least a little time in the next few weeks reviewing this pack.  Just after break, I will be sending home a similar pack that covers K-3 content for science.  Look for that in your child’s binder soon after our return from break.

I hope everyone enjoys Spring Break and the more relaxed schedule.  Here is to safe travels and enjoyable time together.  I look forward to hearing about all the various activities upon our return on April 21st.
